LAZY F WORKING GUEST RANCH TEXAS NEWS

Wednesday 24 February 2010

My daughter, Sydney, and her High School friends wanted to rope in the local rodeos. I gave them some fencing materials, an old squeeze chute, and bought three roping steers. The rest was up to them. A day later and they are having fun. What better way for me to spend the afternoon. Watching my daughter and her friends have fun, outside in the sun. Since the roping arena is all set up, Sydney and her friends are going to let the guests have a try too. More fun!!

There is a great deal more to Smiley, Texas than you might think.
Here is a photo I took this morning at 7:03 AM, Tuesday 16 Feb 2010
I think it is time I write down some of what I know  ...
You are welcome to e-mail me and ask questions....

Notice the "light" in the tower... it is NOT a light!!
The huge Manford Feed Mill was one of eight chicken feed mills that existed in Smiley by 1950. Built during the Cold War, it was the largest construction project in the history of Smiley. I was starting 1st Grade in 1950. It did not take us kids long to learn the Manford Feed Mill was not exactly what it seemed. Festooned with antennas; every door locked or "casually" guarded; mysterious lights and noises. Strangers coming and going. Huge underground rooms and tunnels under the roads and (we heard) under local buildings w/concealed doors in floors and walls. Us kids, like cats, had curiosity!!!
At one time, the "Mill" had a big high-gain directional
antenna on the tower pointing South. Every kid and
adult in the area knew what it was pointing at..
HAUNTED MOUNTAIN!!
Five(5) miles out of Smiley is Rocky Mound (map name) or Haunted Mountain (local name).
See this Google Earth KMZ file.

Since I was a little boy living on the ranch, the beautiful red Drummond Flox was the first "Spring" flower to bloom. When I saw them in the pasture, Spring and fun was not far away. The Flox bring memories of a 5 year old tow-headed boy, his single shot .22 rifle, dog and horse out walking and exploring.

For the past 60 years the first Flox has happened in late February. To my surprise, on 15 January, not only a Flox but a butterfly. This is going to be an early and unusual Spring.

DOWNLOAD THIS MOVIE - If you are interested. In 1986, I was a sponsor of the Smiley Junior Historians. I had a video camera and their project was a video of the history of Smiley, Texas. They were teenagers then and now they are parents with teenagers. Sadly, Michelle Alvarado, who is standing on the left in the credits at the end of the movie, died this year. She fought a losing battle against Lupus. I had forgotten I had this movie on my hard drive and I found it today and recalled their voices and faces from long ago when we had such fun making this for you. My daughter (16), now Michelle's age back then, is named Sydney for her Great Great Grandfather, Algernon Sidney Billings, the old trail driver and one of the founders of Smiley, talked about in the movie. John Wesley Hardin, also mentioned, is one of three serial killers in our family and lived on this ranch. This video is one of those Voices of my Past.

LAZY F WORKING GUEST RANCH TEXAS NEWS
24 October 2009 - The Lazy F Guest Hunters - (l to r) TwoforOne, Sydney, Mad Dog #1, John, Dead Hog #1, Sonny, Dead Hog #2, "Fast" Lane, Mike, and Mad Dog #2 - Our two guests from the UK (Mike and Twofur) and the Lazy F Hunters went out in the afternoon for 30 minutes and killed two BIG wild hogs. There were 40 hogs in the bunch, but the dogs only caught two. The two "catch" dogs went into a manic frenzy, biting and snarling, as they held the hogs for the hunters. As often happens, instinct overcame training and the dogs went mad. We had to put the dogs in nylon straight jackets to protect the hunters and the hogs. As you can see, they could barely be restrained from attacking anyone around them. It was too late for the hogs, however, who in a panic to get away from the mad dogs, ran South at full speed right into the path of bullets going North. Twofur, whose real name is Jodie (previous nickname "Skunk" - named after her black and white hair from last year) - got her nickname from the fact she is "expecting" later this year. Hence - "Two For One".

21 October 2009 - The Lazy F Guest Cowboys and Cowgirls Take a Break - Today we gathered all the cows being held in the hay field and drove them to the pens. We decided to take a break this afternoon and practice roping and play a little. Some of the results are shown above.

3 October 2009 - The Lazy F Guest Ranch Riders in the Rain - At 10:30 AM on Saturday, 3 October, the pictures above tell the story. It was pouring rain on the Gonzales, Texas, Come and Take It Parade. The ranch had slot #119. I was (good thinking, huh) driving the truck and my daughter, Sydney, Sonny, John, Cindy, Devon Warsecka, Lane, Krysie, our guest from New Zealand, and our German guest, Marc, were riding horses in the rain. Marc (the only one in the black rain slicker dressed for the rain) was dry and warm. Sydney, as you can see, was NOT pleased but "Cowgirl'd Up" as did all my other riders. It was a LONG ride in the rain

5 October 2009 - The Lazy F Guest Ranch gets rain after 27 months - For only the 3rd time in my life, the lake behind the guest ranch went dry this Summer. Not even the rain that caused the Flash Flood on 29 Sep, touched the lake or the ranch. That rain fell North of the ranch on the main Sandies Creek drainage area. Starting 2 October, this changed!! 9 inches of rain on 2-3 October changed everything. One day the road was dry and, on Monday, 5 October, I went zooming around the curve at 50 MPH to check the water and .. I found lots of it. My truck slammed to a stop in the flood and I was able to back out. Above are two pictures of the lake. The middle picture is the lake with a bare 4 inches of extra rain water on 4 October. The next day, the same view with a LOT more water, on 5 October. Whether the drought is over, however, remains to be seen. The rushing water over the road is going directly into the lake behind the house. .

01 Oct 2009 - Clay's Horse - Martha Stewart - BITTEN BY GIANT RATTLESNAKE - About 2130 hrs on Thursday, 1 October 2009, our German guest, Marc, and I had been riding since late afternoon. It got dark about 2015 hrs and we were riding back by moonlight. On the way back to the barn, my horse, Martha, suddenly jumped and stumbled. We were only 200 meters from the barn, just outside the yard fence. 30 seconds later, we arrived at the barn and Martha could hardly walk. She was holding her right rear leg up under her and leaning against the barn post. She was trembling and sweating. I thought she had colic. Not a clue here. Sonny Guillory, who works for me, drove up about that time to check on us. He told me it was not colic. Something had happened to Martha's leg. Sonny looked at her leg and, by this time, Martha was blazing hot, sweating, and having muscle spasms. Note that Martha is a BIG horse, weighing over 1500 lbs. Sonny wrapped Martha's foot in an ice pack and Cindy, who also works for me, sprayed her with water to cool her. Fortunately, Sonny had a bottle of Dexamethazone, which is a powerful steroid aid to shock, inflammation and and promotes healing. 5 cc of Dex and 25 cc of Penicillin and suddenly she was on her way to recovery. The next day, Sonny examined the injury and found the fang marks were over 1 inch (2.54 cm) apart. This makes the snake over 6 feet long. Enough poison to kill a normal person, not even to mention my daughter, Sydney, who weighs 95 lbs and walks in the woods in tennis shoes. In the 60 years I have been walking and riding on this ranch, I have only seen about 20 rattlesnakes. Oddly enough, Martha almost stepped on one about 2 weeks ago. She was walking along a trail and it crawled out of the grass in front of her. I pulled her to a stop before she stepped on it. Sonny killed it and we have the rattles. That amounts to 10% of all the rattlesnakes I have ever seen on the ranch in the wild, all in 2 weeks. They may have sensed we were about to get some record rains and were all crawling and active. Usually a rattlesnake can sense the footfall vibrations of horse and find another place to be ... quickly. And, sometimes, NOT.
